What Should We Eat?

Over the past several years, I have spent countless hours learning about nutrition through college professors, documentaries, books, and research. There is a lot of conflicting information, but one thing remains constant. People who eat real food are healthier. They look better but, more importantly, they feel better.

What is real food?

Real food comes from the Earth. It is grown in the ground or on a plant, it is raised on a farm, it roams in the wild, or it swims free in the ocean. Whether you eat a paleo, vegetarian, vegan, pescatarian, or any other diet, you should be able to identify all of the ingredients in your meal. Let's review the important parts of any diet-

Vegetables:

Vegetables are important. Eat them. I know they are your least favorite thing to eat. I get it, believe me, but they are so so so important. We should be eating 2-3 cups of vegetables a day at a minimum.

Fruit:

Fruit is delicious and good for you. If you are on any diet that restricts or eliminates fruit, stop! Go bite into a fresh, juicy apple and remember all the reasons we love fruit. The USDA recommendation is 2 cups of fruit a day. I can usually meet this goal by lunchtime. Fruit is the best.

Protein:

There are endless sources of protein. Meat, fish, nuts, beans, and even vegetables have protein in them. The recommendation is 0.8 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight (there are 2.2 pounds in a kg). How you choose to get your protein is a personal decision.
